Description:

RED IMAGE WITH LINES BY ROBERT MOTHERWELL (AMERICAN, 1915-1991)
Lithograph with blind stamp and watermark to the sheet, signed and numbered 16/50. Red rectangle with black lines. Image impression 23.6"h. 19.5"w. Sheet 41.5"h. 29.4"w. Frame 45"h. 31"w.

    Condition:
  • Examined out of frame for sheet measurement. There is a circular "ROBERT MOTHERWELL EDITIONS" blind stamp in the lower right corner near the signature and underneath the matting, with "ARCHES - FRANCE" watermark in the same area. There is a tear repair just right of the signature and number emerging from beneath the matting and up about 5 or 6 inches, noticed as the white repair material that shows there on the top surface - this repair runs about 6.5" from the edge of the sheet, upward. Two additional apparent tear repairs along the right side, both at the level of the image (alongside image) but NOT visible due to the matting on the picture, and that upper right corner above seems to have been torn at one point and is nicely repaired (you should see this in an image of the tape, and there are some penciled numbers on that torn piece as well) - so all three of these are hidden by the matting. Note that while inspecting the repair, which can be seen from the back side, it is very hard to feel these repaired areas and all of them are in good order as repaired areas. There are 1 inch long pieces (vertically) of white tape at both top corners and both sides near the center that hold the sheet to the matting - all four pieces of tape cover less than 1/4 of an inch of the sheet. The bottom has full width 'pocket' created with a cardstock type paper attached to the matting - the sheet slips in behind that 'pocket', so no tape at the bottom of the sheet as this cardstock that is attached to the matting is what is taped down. There are foxing lines at both sides and bottom border AT THE EDGE of the matting - but along the top border, there is a straight foxing line visible about 1 inch down from the border of the matting.
